Meaningful participation of youth is an essential condition for ensuring human rights and justice. Dalit Lives Matter Global Alliance (DLMGA) organizing a “Youth for Human Rights and Democracy” workshop in Birendranagar, Surkhet from June 13-15 bringing together 19 Dalit and marginalized youth of Karnali province and building a strong “youth force” as emerging “Dignity Defenders ” capable of raising voices against injustice, indignities and inequity. The workshop strengthen youth leadership, civic engagement, and grassroots human rights advocacy among marginalized communities.
The project responded to persistent structural inequalities, particularly caste-based violence, limited civic participation, and lack of accessible human rights education in rural and marginalized communities. It equipped young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to identify injustice, engage in informed advocacy, and promote democratic values at the community level.
Over the course of the three-day training, participants engaged in structured learning sessions and interactive discussions facilitated by human rights experts, legal professionals, policymakers, and experienced advocates. Key thematic areas included caste-based discrimination and social exclusion, mental health and psychosocial well-being, Dalit rights and legal frameworks, leadership development, and strategic communication for social change.
As a result of the training, participants have formed a provincial network of Dignity Defenders committed to advancing human rights, promoting social justice, and strengthening community resilience. These youth leaders are now better positioned to raise awareness, support rights-based interventions, and contribute to long-term systemic change within their respective districts.
